Nazarene Bible Quizzing in '70s and '80s influences second generation in 2009

In the 1970s and '80s, Jim Buchanan was minister of music and youth director at the Church of the Nazarene in Havana, Illinois. During the nine years he was there, he and his wife, Arla Jeanne, spent many hours with the teens developing a successful quiz team and making it a fun study time together.

These quizzers are now grown up, married, and have children of their own who are quizzers. Four of them are cousins that have children who just qualified to go to General Assembly and compete with quizzers from all over the world in World Quiz. That will make five second-cousin-juniors who will be participating in Orlando.

They are from various churches: Lydia and Addie Roat are from Peoria, Illinois, First; Alex Roat is from the Havana, Illinois, church; Lucas Arrington is from the New Beginnings church in Mount Airy, Maryland; and Sophia Sanguedolce is from Springfield, Illinois First. There may be others from the original quiz teams who also have children quizzing, but these are the ones known at this time.

All of this involvement goes back to when Jim Buchanan instilled in the children a love and need for Bible Quizzing. The Buchanans served as missionaries in Africa for 19 years and in the U.S. for four years. In God's special timing and calling, they returned to Havana, Illinois in March 2009, with Jim as the full time minister.
